Despite her unrealistic body and pouty mouth, I can't help being obsessed by Barbie. I grew up with her -- in fact, I recently discovered an old photo of me at Christmas holding a now-collectible "Fashion Queen" Barbie with wigs.
So it's no surprise that Barbie shows up in my collages. I made this book, about the size of a pack of cigarettes, as an homage to vintage Barbie.

Unlike me, Barbie doesn't mind being looked at. That's the theme of the collages. I also animated the images here.
Every page is so great! I love seeing vintage Barbie in art.
ReplyDeleteI inherited my step-sister's Barbies when I was about 7 years old.
They came in a plastic wardrobe kind of closet thing that had hangars and dresses and little plastic shoes. And a tiny little powder-puff. I loved that thing.
(omg. the internet is amazing! this was it!:

But on the flipside, when I was given this barbie make-up head:

I cut off all its hair, played tic-tac-toe on its forehead in purple magic marker and then took it outside and kept trying to run it over with my Big Wheel.
What can I say? I was full of contradictions, even at age 7.
I think I had the very same case!!! Wish I could see you on that Big Wheel -- it would go viral on YouTube today!
