To make it easier, I choose a theme or style. Last year, I combined retro food photos with old buildings. The year before, I paired kitty heads with human bodies.
This year, I tried something more traditional. Following one of the practices in Randel Plowman's classic A Collage a Day, I created monochromatic backgrounds out of scraps of paper and ephemera. For focal points, I took black and white images from old encyclopedias. Captions add a surreal touch.
